The “Story Of A Journey”

The “Story of a Journey” (“Sipur al ha’derech”) initiative was recently launched as an additional means of promoting a pluralistic and rich society in which there is respect for and familiarity with the stories and cultures of all of its components, with an emphasis on the contribution of each group to Israeli society, particularly that of the Ethiopian Israeli community. In the framework of the initiative, an Ethiopian Israelis share their personal life stories in front of various groups, while integrating background information about the Ethiopian Jewish community, its journey to Israel, and its experiences in Israel. Each lecture is followed by a group discussion. The President of Israel and his wife hosted the initiative at the President’s Residence on May 30, 2016, which served as a significant benchmark for this initiative which provides a forum to address the story of the immigration of the Ethiopian Jewish community. About 200 individuals took part at the event at the President’s Residence, while David Elazar shared his personal story about his immigration to Israel, followed which President Reuven Rivkin gave his blessing to the initiative. David Abete, a graduate of Olim Beyahad, began the initiative as a personal initiative at his own home, while “Story of a Journey” now partners with many organizations, including Olim Beyahad, the Israel Association of Community Centers, Beit Hatfusot, Bnei Akiva youth movement, “Aharai!”, and of course dozens of young men and women who share their stories. The following is a link to a short video about this exciting initiative:

Gil Tamir Joined Olim Beyahad’s Staff

We are pleased to announce that Gil Tamir joined Olim Beyahad’s staff as Manager of our Graduates Department! We welcome Gil and wish him lots of luck in his new position.

“Social Media Initiative”

We recently operated a “social media initiative”, aiming to expose participants’ success stories, eliminate stereotypes about the Ethiopian Israeli community, and create a true change in the behavioral and thought patterns towards and within the community. This involved a series of media items on Channel 2 and Mako’s web portal that exposed successful role models in the Ethiopian Israeli community (see link above), as well as the community’s wonderful culture and the terrific opportunity to integrate its young members. We launched the initiative in cooperation with Keshet Broadcasting, Gitam BBDO, the Baron De Hirsch Fund, and the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation, and we hope to continue the initiative during the coming year.

Olim Beyahad Is Excited To Congratulate Former Knesset Member And Olim Beyahad Graduate And Partner, Pnina Tamano-Shata

Olim Beyahad is excited to congratulate former Knesset member and Olim Beyahad graduate and partner, Pnina Tamano-Shata, on receiving the Martin Luther King Award in May, 2016 for her activism in achieving equal rights. The following is an excerpt from her speech: “‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’ were the words of Martin Luther King. I learned from Martin Luther King that a fight whose roots are in the love of man is destined to win! That a fight whose roots are in intense faith has the power to drive out the fear and sense of isolation in an unjust reality. I learned that love is better than hate and violence. And even when it seems like a lone voice crying in the wilderness, we have an obligation to express our voice loudly, over and over again, until it reverberates. Because fighting racism and discrimination are the foundation for a better and more correct world. I am excited and grateful to receive this award.”

Olim Beyahad graduate appointed as Judge at Haifa’s Traffic Court!

“Olim Beyahad” is proud and overjoyed on occasion of the appointment of Attorney Esther Tepeta Gradi as Judge at the Haifa District’s Traffic Court. In addition to this being a wonderful achievement for Esther – one which she reached as a result of her hard work and talent – it also serves as a significant advancement for the Ethiopian Israeli community and Israeli society as a whole.

Esther lives in Jerusalem with her husband and two children, and is a graduate of Olim Beyahad’s core program. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Haifa University, as well as a Master’s Degree (in the “Mediation and Negotiations” track) from Bar Ilan University. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree, she interned at the State Attorney’s Office for State Attorneys Eran Shendar and Moshe Lador. From 2009 and until her recent appointment at judge, Esther served as the judicial law clerk for Judge Dr. Avraham Tennenbaum at the Jerusalem District’s Traffic Court. In 2014, Esther was selected as an outstanding judicial law clerk.

While building her professional career, Esther invested much of her time in social and communal involvement, providing professional assistance for Ethiopian Israelis and especially Ethiopian Israeli women.

We are so delighted, Esther, and we send you our best wishes. We believe that this nomination is only the beginning of a wonderful career that is yet to come. Continue being an inspiration and a role model for additional graduates and young adults!
