The “Story of a Journey” (“Sipur al ha’derech”) initiative was recently launched as an additional means of promoting a pluralistic and rich society in which there is respect for and familiarity with the stories and cultures of all of its components, with an emphasis on the contribution of each group to Israeli society, particularly that of the Ethiopian Israeli community. In the framework of the initiative, an Ethiopian Israelis share their personal life stories in front of various groups, while integrating background information about the Ethiopian Jewish community, its journey to Israel, and its experiences in Israel. Each lecture is followed by a group discussion. The President of Israel and his wife hosted the initiative at the President’s Residence on May 30, 2016, which served as a significant benchmark for this initiative which provides a forum to address the story of the immigration of the Ethiopian Jewish community. About 200 individuals took part at the event at the President’s Residence, while David Elazar shared his personal story about his immigration to Israel, followed which President Reuven Rivkin gave his blessing to the initiative. David Abete, a graduate of Olim Beyahad, began the initiative as a personal initiative at his own home, while “Story of a Journey” now partners with many organizations, including Olim Beyahad, the Israel Association of Community Centers, Beit Hatfusot, Bnei Akiva youth movement, “Aharai!”, and of course dozens of young men and women who share their stories. The following is a link to a short video about this exciting initiative:
We are pleased to announce that Gil Tamir joined Olim Beyahad’s staff as Manager of our Graduates Department! We welcome Gil and wish him lots of luck in his new position.
We recently operated a “social media initiative”, aiming to expose participants’ success stories, eliminate stereotypes about the Ethiopian Israeli community, and create a true change in the behavioral and thought patterns towards and within the community. This involved a series of media items on Channel 2 and Mako’s web portal that exposed successful role models in the Ethiopian Israeli community (see link above), as well as the community’s wonderful culture and the terrific opportunity to integrate its young members. We launched the initiative in cooperation with Keshet Broadcasting, Gitam BBDO, the Baron De Hirsch Fund, and the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation, and we hope to continue the initiative during the coming year.
Olim Beyahad is excited to congratulate former Knesset member and Olim Beyahad graduate and partner, Pnina Tamano-Shata, on receiving the Martin Luther King Award in May, 2016 for her activism in achieving equal rights. The following is an excerpt from her speech: “‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’ were the words of Martin Luther King. I learned from Martin Luther King that a fight whose roots are in the love of man is destined to win! That a fight whose roots are in intense faith has the power to drive out the fear and sense of isolation in an unjust reality. I learned that love is better than hate and violence. And even when it seems like a lone voice crying in the wilderness, we have an obligation to express our voice loudly, over and over again, until it reverberates. Because fighting racism and discrimination are the foundation for a better and more correct world. I am excited and grateful to receive this award.”
